Brand

What people expect from you before you say anything — a reputation held in other people's heads, not a logo you own.

A brand is the set of expectations people hold about you before any conversation starts. It lives in their heads, not in your files, which is why it cannot be designed in an afternoon and cannot be declared. A logo, a colour and a typeface are identity; the brand is what those things get attached to over time.

It is built almost entirely by repetition of a specific behaviour. Turning up on the same day, delivering the same standard, saying no to the same kinds of work. Each instance is unremarkable; the accumulation is the asset. That is also why it breaks asymmetrically — a reputation built over five years by consistency can be materially damaged by one loudly mishandled month, because a broken expectation is more memorable than a met one.

The commercially useful test is what a stranger completes when they hear your name. If the sentence is "they do the thing for the people", you have one. If it is "I have heard of them", you have awareness, which is not the same and does not support a price.

Worked: two firms quote the same $6,000. One is known locally for a specific speciality and is chosen without a second quote being sought. The other is one of three quotes, and the client negotiates. Same work, same price, entirely different sales cost.

Creators
Consistency is the whole mechanism: the same subject, the same standard, the same schedule for two years builds something a redesign cannot.
Business owners
You know you have one when clients stop getting a second quote — that is the moment the brand starts paying for the years that built it.
